About the course
How and why did the modern Middle East become such an extraordinarily complex region? What are the origins of contemporary phenomena such as the "Arab Spring" and the "Islamic State"? In this course you will find answers to these – and more – questions. The course will discuss the developments in the Middle East from the 19th century to the present, and provide an in-depth historical context to the region's current affairs.
About the Professor
Professor Asher Susser is a Senior Research Fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University, and former Director of the Center. For over 30 years he has taught in the University's Department of Middle Eastern and African History and in 2006 he received the Faculty of Humanities Outstanding Teacher's Award. He has been a visiting professor at Brandeis, Cornell, Chicago University and the University of Arizona, as well as a visiting fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Professor Susser has authored or edited 11 books and published numerous papers in international and Israeli publications. His latest books are: Israel, Jordan and Palestine: The Two-State Imperative (2012) and The Rise of Hamas and the Crisis of Secularism in the Arab World (2010).
