About the Course
The course explains how the Islam emerged and grew into a new civilization in the Middle East, how nomad tribes turned into empires spreading over continents. The first part of the course covers the first millennium of the of Islam and presents the main political events, from the birth of Muhammad in the 6th Century, to the arrival of the Otomans in the Middle East in the beginning of the 16th Century. The second part delves into social and cultural realities of the medieval Middle East.
The course looks at the main stages of Arab-Islamic history and will demonstrate how these bear an influence to this day.
About the Professor
Prof. Miri Shefer-Mossensohn is a social and cultural historian of the pre-modern Islamic world. She graduated from Tel Aviv University (B.A., Magna cum Laude, 1994, and PhD, 2001). She held fellowship in the Wellcome Library for the History of Medicine, Princeton University, and the University of Cambridge. She has been awarded for excellence in teaching on campus several times.
